With the emergency of electric desks, people are now free to set their own desk height which means there is more opportunity than ever to set the seat height at the correct position. In modern ergonomic office chairs, the height adjustment is usually controlled by a lever under the seat. Pull on the lever when seated on the chair and it will lower gradually. Release the lever when you reach the right level. If you ease your weight off the chair and carry out the same process, the seat will rise.
So what is the correct height for an ergonomic office chair?
You need to find the position where your feet are comfortably and positioned flat on the floor. The angle at your knee level should be approximately 90 degrees. In general if the seat comes level with your knees when you are standing next to it then it is likely to be near the correct the position. It may be some small adjustments are necessary. On occasion if you seat has a forward tilt function that will open the angle up to slightly more than 90 degrees, which is fine and this can be a very healthily position to work in.
It is also important to ensure that your seat is not pressing in on the back of your knees. You should try to ensure that there is about 2-3cm gap between the seat and the back of your knees.
After adjusting the seat to the correct level, you may need to adjust your electric desk to match.
If the chair is still too high after reducing it the lowest height or adjusting it with the height of a fixed desk, a footstool is a great solution.
